SYNOPSIS

The session will highlight practical approaches for risk prevention, safety management and risk communication in R&D laboratories using nanomaterials, on the basis of a precautionary approach aiming to ensure a safe and successful development of nanomaterials. State of the art initiatives in the field, as well as specific methodologies and tools developed  by the NanoLab project (now finished) will be discussed.  During the project, supported by the Italian Workers Compensation Authority (INAIL), risk assessment has been performed through a combination of modelling activities, basing on application of control banding tools for nanomaterials, and multi-parameters exposure measurements in the labs. Risk control procedures and precautionary measures have been determined for all R&D processes in the three case studies taken into consideration (nanoparticles, graphene, nanowires). Risk communication has been realized through an interactive and user friendly tool, including a visual web-platform and pictograms targeted to different type of workers in the Lab. The session aims to present and discuss further opportunities for development and integration of the NanoLab methodology, also in comparison with similar tools developed at EU and international level.
