SYNOPSIS

Synchrotron radiation (SR) is one of the most powerful methods of investigation of matter, from the structural to the electronic, magnetic, optical properties, spanning in a huge variety of fields, from physics, chemistry and materials science, to biology, protein and macro-molecular crystallography, medical sciences, non-destructive imaging, engineering, metrology, nanosciences and nanotechnology, to name a few.

In the last decades, starting from the fundamental natural sciences, the use of SR to investigate matter has moved increasingly to applications, also involving industrial partners. Furthermore, the SR facilities are open to free research and to all researchers, by periodic submission of experiment proposals on a competitive peer reviewed base.

In this Session, Tobias Schulli will introduce the audience to the most recent advancements of the technology and use of SR in Nanosciences, focusing on the most advanced source available for users, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Carlo Mariani will show the present landscape of SR European actions, focusing on the European Synchrotron and FEL User Organization (ESUO). Jens Gobrecht will show the most recent advances in extreme ultraviolet photolitography and non-destructive x-ray tomography characterisation, based on direct collaborations with world leading chip manufacturers and suppliers.
