Safety by Design: Lessons from particle toxicology

Lang TRAN,  IOM - UK

Fibre toxicology studies have demonstrated that long (length > 20 um), thin and biopersistent fibrous materials are the most reactive in the lung. The mechanisms of toxicity are well studied. In this presentation, the mode of action of fibres will be shown and compared to that of carbon nanotubes.

A case study on Rockwool fibres will be used to illustrate how industry can make use of toxicology findings to modify their industrial materials to render them less toxic: An earlier attempt at the Safe-by-Design concept.
