TS.I.E

Microfluidics, Fluids at Interfaces and applications

Microfluidics is commonly used in biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceutical industry and engineering, most often to move around and carefully mix extremely small amounts of different fluids under well controlled conditions. Beside these well known applications, advanced microfluidics can also be designed to exploit the physic-chemical interaction of fluids and suspended particles of different nature with the bounding surfaces. In this case nanoscale effects arising at the interfaces become crucial and the resulting system demands for experimental and theoretical analysis spanning a range of scales from few nanometers to several micrometers.
The present section focuses on these aspects addressing different applications, spanning from simulation and fabrication techniques for designing bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces stable to temperature and pressure fluctuation for turbulent drag reduction to the exploitation of active matter and plasmic structures. Although most contributions concern basic aspects of the relevant technologies, the talks will focus on explaining and highlighting their technological potential in the different contexts.
